Hand Holding Pose Reference: Grip Photos From the Side

Reference photos of a hand in a holding grip, seen from the side or the back, turned between sixty and one hundred and eighty degrees from facing the camera. The grip wraps round an object, and the object hides part of the hand.

What changes at this angle

  • The fingers wrap round the object in order, with the fingertips coming back toward the thumb.
  • The thumb presses from the opposite side of the object to the fingers.
  • Each finger bends at all three joints, so the knuckles read as rows of ridges following the object's curve.
  • In a firm grip the four fingers press side by side with no gaps between them.

What goes wrong

  • Drawing straight fingers resting against the object, so the hand reads as touching or presenting the thing rather than holding it.
  • Placing the thumb beside the fingers on the same side of the object, so the grip reads as a paw clamped on one side and the hold looks powerless.
  • Drawing the fingers wrapped as smooth bands with no joints, so the hand reads like rubber tubing coiled round the object.
  • Spreading the fingers around the object as if the hand were relaxed, so the grip reads loose and the object looks about to slip.

Try it
